About The Somme

The Battle of the Somme was the largest battle on the Western Front during the First World War and this area will be forever scarred by the conflict.  Around one million men were wounded or killed in the battle, making it one of the bloodiest in human history.  In this area there are the remains of trenches, many cemeteries and a number of memorials that commemorate the sacrifice of those who fought and died in action.

Visiting the Somme will give students an insight into the lives of soldiers and deepen their understanding of the way that the war shaped Britain and the world as it is today.  They can discover the main sites of remembrance and begin to appreciate the level of sacrifice that was made.
