Overview

Home to the world’s first iron bridge, this World Heritage Site was the beating heart of the Industrial Revolution.  The bridge was one structure which became a real turning point in English design and engineering and after it was built, cast iron become widely used in construction.  The Ironbridge Gorge is home to a wide range of exciting museums that will give you an unforgettable experience and a real insight into life in Victorian times.

You will also have the opportunity to go on a boat trip on the river Severn and learn about the role of the river during the Industrial Revolution.

Consider combining this itinerary with one of our other Midlands trips and include more visits that will help you learn about how the Industrial Revolution shaped the whole region.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Depart School and travel to Ironbridge.

    Start your trip with a visit to the Museum of the Gorge which portrays the history of the Ironbridge Gorge and the surrounding area of Coalbrookdale through films and interactive displays.

    Then head to the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron to find out how the iron cast here changed the course of history.  See a range of exhibits, art and cookware all made from iron.

    Take the short walk up the hill to the Darby Houses, former homes of the Darby family.  Wander round the houses to see memorabilia from the family and get a glimpse of an Industrialist’s life.

    Arrive and settle into your accommodation.

  2. Day 2

    Begin your day with a visit to Blists Hill Victorian Town and head back to the age of steam and experience life from more than 100 years ago in this fantastic open-air museum.

    Then go on a Boat Trip to learn about the history of the river during the Industrial Revolution and how the Severn Valley Gorge was formed.

    In the afternoon, visit the Jackfield Tile Museum to explore the home of British tile design and see galleries packed full with work from the best designers.

    OR

    Visit the Coalport China Museum to see some truly spectacular treasures – from elaborate vases to hand-painted miniatures.

    Return to School.
