This is the largest Christmas market in Northern France. Roam amongst seasonally decorated wooden chalets offering a variety of gifts including local handicraft in pottery, confectionery and jewellery, take a ride on the Ferris wheel or taste the local fayre, including chestnuts and glühwein (for adults only!) and practise your French!
Imagine, just within a couple of hours of leaving the UK, your school group could be in Place Rihour in the heart of Lille, where more than 80 colourful stalls sell local arts, crafts and regional food specialities such as Maroilles cheese, chicory pâté, macaroons and babeluttes (soft caramels).
When you tire of shopping, stroll next door to Grand Place - surrounded by some of the city's finest architecture, including the 18th-century, Flemish-Renaissance Vieille Bourse - and take a ride on the 164ft-high Ferris wheel while marvelling at the snowy-covered miniature village at its foot. On the Saturday before Christmas, Father Christmas spectacularly "falls" from the Chamber of Commerce's 262-ft-high belfry.

Lille Christmas Market can be visited in a day, without the need to stay overnight. Extend your stay by a night and add in a lunchtime demonstration with a professional chef at a cookery school or a demonstration at local a waffle-maker, artisan Chocolatier or Fromagerie and plenty of festive shopping!
